Choctaw is a Muskogean language. Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminole are also Muskogean languages. The Chickasaw language is closely related to the Choctaw language. These lessons are based on the Chata Anumpli Choctaw Language Sampler published by Various Indian Peoples Publishing Company.

Sounds Represented By Vowels Sounds Represented By Consonants Are As In English Except For:
'a'  as in 'father' 'b'  as in 'boy
'a'  nasalized as in 'tank' 'ch' as in church
'e'  as  in 'they', or long a 'k' as in 'kick'
'i' as in 'it' 'hl' as 'uhl' or 'th'
'i' nasalized as in 'ink' 'm' as in 'might'
'o' as in 'not', or as 'u' in 'put' 'n' as in 'night'
'o' nasalized as in 'honk' 'p' as in 'pow'
'u' as 'but' or as 'a' in 'sofa' 's' as in 'sir'
'u' nasalized as in 'dunk' 'sh' as in 'shall'
Other Sounds Diphthongs
'ia' is pronounced as 'iya' 'ai' is pronounced as in 'i' in 'pine'
'io' is pronounced as 'iyo' 'au' is pronounced as 'o' 'now' or 'a' in 'all'
'oa' is pronounced as 'owa'
'oi' is pronounced 'owi'
